Chest Zip vs. Back Zip vs. Zipperless: Which Entry System Is Best?

If you talk to three different surfers about wetsuit entry systems, you will likely get three completely conflicting opinions.
A surfer who grew up in the 1990s will tell you that a classic back-zip is the only suit worth buying because it’s effortless to step into. A younger shortboarder will insist that zipperless is the only way to get true paddling freedom. And a cold-water charger will tell you that a chest-zip is non-negotiable if you want to survive a heavy winter session.
The truth is that every entry system represents a compromise between three competing variables: paddling flexibility, water flush prevention, and ease of entry.
When you are spending serious money on a high-end fullsuit, you need to understand the mechanical trade-offs of each system – and why custom tailoring alters the equation entirely.
1. The Back Zip: Convenient, But Flawed
BACK ZIP MECHANICS: [Vertical Metal/Plastic Zipper From Collar to Lumbar] + [Velcro Collar Flap] Pros: Easy to put on and take off. Cons: Creates a rigid “stiff line” along the spine; high risk of neck flushing.
For forty years, the vertical back-zip was the industry standard. It features a long zipper running from the back of the neck collar down to the lower spine, pulled closed via a long webbing leash.
The Mechanics
Because the entry opening extends down to your waist, you can step into a back-zip suit like a pair of trousers and slide your arms in without stretching the rubber. It is by far the easiest suit to get on and off.
The Performance Cost
Zippers do not stretch. When you place a 40cm rigid plastic or metal zipper down the center of your back, you create an inflexible “stiff line” straight across your spine. Every time you arch your back to paddle, your back muscles are fighting against the rigid zipper tape.
Furthermore, back-zip suits rely on a simple velcro collar to seal the neck. When duck-diving heavy waves, water pressure forces the velcro flap open slightly, sending a bucket of ice-cold water straight down your back.
2. The Zipperless System: Light, But Fragile
ZIPPERLESS MECHANICS: [Overlapping Neoprene Shoulder Crossover] (Zero Zippers or Hardware) Pros: Extremely light; no rigid components on the torso. Cons: Entry collar stretches out over time; difficult to put on/take off.
Zipperless suits remove metal and plastic hardware entirely, relying on ultra-stretchy overlapping neoprene shoulder panels that you stretch open, step through, and pull over your head.
The Mechanics
Without a zipper, the suit feels incredibly light. There are no rigid components to press against your chest or back when lying on your board.
The Performance Cost
To get a human torso through a zipperless neck opening, the neoprene around the collar has to stretch to over three hundred percent of its natural size every time you put the suit on.
Over a single season of use, that continuous stretching destroys the rubber’s memory. The neck collar becomes loose and stretched out, leading to severe water flushing during duck-dives. Zipperless entry works reasonably well for ultra-thin 2mm summer suits, but it is fundamentally unsuitable for long-term cold-water hardware.
3. The Chest Zip: The Uncompromised Performance Standard
CHEST ZIP MECHANICS: [Short Horizontal YKK Marine Zipper Across Chest] + [Contoured Crossover Hood] Pros: Uninterrupted back panel; 360-degree watertight neck seal. Cons: Requires basic technique to enter and exit smoothly.
The chest-zip (or front-zip) entry features a short, horizontal zipper running across the chest collarbone, attached to an overlapping crossover neck flap.
The Mechanics
You step through a wide, elasticated neck opening, slide your arms into the sleeves, pull the integrated neck flap over your head, and zip the short horizontal slider closed across your chest.
