“No ocean, no life. No blue, no green. No ocean, no us.”Marc Morral

Chemical sunscreens carry toxic synthetic compounds that wash directly off our skin into marine ecosystems, bleaching coral reefs and disrupting marine life. As co-founder of natural sun care brand NUURA, Marc Morral is on a mission to eliminate ocean-harming sun protection by crafting fully organic, biodegradable, and certified mineral formulas.

We caught up with Marc to discuss eliminating chemical filters and nano-ingredients, agricultural respect from the ground up, and why the surfing industry has a unique duty to lead environmental change.

The Interview

Why is conserving and protecting the oceans so personal to you?

Marc: First and foremost, protecting our home is our responsibility as humans, as well as our commitment to future generations. We must realize that all life on Earth stems from the ocean: No ocean, no life. No blue, no green. No ocean, no us.

On top of that, as passionate surfers, we are all deeply in love with and profoundly grateful for the ocean.

How is NUURA pioneering better protection for marine life?

Marc: Our formulas and packaging are designed, developed, and manufactured to deliver the highest level of health protection while remaining completely respectful of the oceans:

  • 0% Chemical Filters & Nano-Ingredients: We completely eliminate chemical filters – the main ingredient harming marine ecosystems – along with nano-sized particles.
  • Organic Farming & Sourcing: By using organic ingredients, our manufacturing footprint is respectful right from the start of the agricultural process.
  • Third-Party Certifications: All NUURA products are independently certified as Eco, Organic, Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Biodegradable, and Fragrance-Free, housed in eco-conscious packaging.

What role should the surfing industry play in driving change?

Marc: Surfing is experiencing a massive moment of cultural and social impact right now, so two things are crucial:

  1. Be Transparent: Include messaging in every communication that highlights our planet’s current situation and stresses the necessity of protecting it.
  2. Transform Operations: Eliminate harmful environmental impacts across all business activities.

Not every industry enjoys the deep, sacred connection that surfing has with the sea. The surf industry should step up and become a leading example for other global sectors to follow.
