As an internationally acclaimed photographer and filmmaker, Morgan Maassen’s life revolves around capturing the raw beauty, light, and motion of the sea. Growing up surfing the iconic points of Santa Barbara, California, Morgan developed an intimate connection to the ocean that continues to shape his creative career and environmental advocacy.
We caught up with Morgan to discuss his favorite wave on earth, cutting out high-margin fast fashion in surfing, and empowering local communities to protect their waters.

The Interview
What are your local surf breaks, and where is your favorite wave in the world?
Morgan: I grew up surfing Sandbar and Rincon in Santa Barbara, spending most of my free time goofing around at a wave called Mesa Lane right down the street from my house.
My favorite spot in the world has to be Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. I truly think it’s the best wave in the world. Beyond the unmatched quality of the wave, the scenery is spectacular: whales, dolphins, sharks, otters, unbelievable sunrises, and the surrounding African landscape.
What does the surfing industry specifically need to do better?
Morgan: So many surf brands make products that serve no real purpose other than driving a high profit margin.
If every brand focused on using higher-quality materials, adopting better manufacturing processes, and committing to a smaller environmental footprint, we would be in a vastly better place. Shifting away from throwaway products and focusing on durable, responsible gear is essential.
What organizations and community movements inspire you?
Morgan: I am a huge fan of Surfrider Foundation. I love how they operate globally while simultaneously empowering local communities to tackle issues at every scale.
Organizations like Take 3 For The Sea and Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii are also doing incredible work right now, educating both current and future generations on vital environmental initiatives.
